Best Cat Breeds: Choosing the Right Cat

If you ask a cat lover what breed of cat, they believe is the best of all, their answer may be a little biased. But that just goes along the lines of “to each their own.” But, when considering the “best” cat breed for different walks of life, there are certain breeds that stand above the rest. Such as the best and friendliest breed of cats to have around children, or the best breeds for different living situations.

Best Cat Breeds for Kids

Dogs can sometimes be difficult to manage when you have small children at home. If you want to make a pet a part of your family alongside your small children, a cat may be just the way to go. However, this doesn't mean you cannot have dogs. There are many affectionate dog breeds that do well with families with kids.

There are a few breeds in particular that some consider to be the best family cat breeds out there. These breeds include Ragdolls, Maine Coons, and Siamese, just to name a few.

These cat breeds are the epitome of laid back and lovable. Especially Ragdoll, who gets its name from how incredibly limp and laid back it can be when in the arms of its beloved humans. All three are great around children, and incredibly tolerant of the wild and chaotic behaviors of children.

Best Cat Breeds for Apartments

Apartment living can sometimes make having a pet a difficult task. However, there are some breeds of cats who are just perfectly happy living in a small living quarter with their human. As long as they have a place to lay in the sun or at least look out the window, the following breeds of cats are more than content to be living in an apartment.

Some of the best apartment living cats include the British and American Shorthair, the Burmese, Maine Coon, Persian, and of course, the Ragdoll. All of these breeds are happy to live and interact with their human companion within the walls of a small apartment space just as they would be in a house.

On the other hand, some breeds to avoid having in an apartment include the Abyssinian and the Bengal breeds of cats. These particular breeds are too adventurous and full of energy for their own good. They need lots of open space to move around and explore in, in addition to natural light to bask in.

Best Cat Breeds for Dog Lovers

If you are a dog lover, but also love the idea of owning a cat as well, there are a handful of cat breeds who will almost instantaneously get along with and love your canine companion. This goes the same for if you already own this cat and intend to get a dog later on down the road.

The Abyssinian, Manx, Burmese, Siamese, Sphynx, Devon Rex, and Turkish Angora are just a few of the amazingly adaptable breeds of cat who would easily get along with a canine family member. Keeping in mind that cats, as individuals, typically have their own personality quirks and may not get along with a dog right off for one reason or another. If you know your cat or dog very well, you can usually get a feel for how they may react to the introduction to one another into the family.

Best Cat Breeds for Cat Lovers with Allergies

Loving cats but also not being able to be in the same room with them for more than five minutes can be quite the struggle. Many cat lovers suffer from an allergy to cat fur and/or dander but have discovered that certain breeds trigger this allergy response a lot less frequently.

These nearly hypoallergenic breeds of cat include the Sphynx, Javanese, Oriental Shorthair, Cornish Rex, and surprisingly the Siberian. The Siberian cat is known for its big fluffy fur coat, so learning that this particular breed is good for allergy sufferers may come as a surprise.

The reason that the Siberian cat can make a good choice for cat lovers who are also allergic to cats is due to their low enzyme levels. Much of what causes a person to sneeze or become itchy after interacting with a cat is the enzymes that are often found in their salvia. These enzymes are deposited into the cat’s fur each time they bathe themselves. Some allergy sufferers are incredibly sensitive to this enzyme, making the Siberian a perfect choice for these individuals.

Conclusion

Choosing the perfect breed of cat to match your lifestyle can be a more difficult task than it is given credit for. Choosing a cat that is great with your kids is just as important as choosing one that would be happy to live in an apartment with you rather than a house.

Allergies are often a huge obstacle to overcome when choosing a cat that would not interfere with your health and ability to breathe in your own home. Thankfully there are some breeds who tend to trigger allergy-type symptoms a lot less frequently in known cat allergy sufferers. At the end of the day, there is definitely a cat out there for each and every cat lover in the world. Some may just need to do more research in order to discover their perfect feline pal.
