Cats have two small thyroid glands located on either side of the trachea (windpipe) in the neck. Under normal circumstances, these glands produce just enough hormone to keep metabolism functioning properly.

What Causes Hyperthyroidism?
In approximately 95-98% of cases, hyperthyroidism is an overactive thyroid gland condition caused by a benign (non-cancerous) enlargement of one or both thyroid glands, called thyroid adenomas or adenomatous hyperplasia (Khare et al., 2018).

Which Cats Are Most at Risk?
Hyperthyroidism almost exclusively affects middle-aged and older cats. Average age at diagnosis is 12-13 years old. Cats under 8 years old rarely develop the disease.
Both male and female cats can be affected equally. Although hyperthyroidism can occur in any breed, some studies suggest Siamese and Himalayan cats may have a slightly lower risk.
Why Is Too Much Thyroid Hormone Dangerous?
